Don’t be scared of a good chemical peel. The results are incredible in restoring a youthful, vibrant appearance to wrinkly, blotchy, or sun-damaged skin.A chemical peel uses a safe acid solution to remove dead and damaged upper skin layers to smooth and refine the skin texture, reduce wrinkles, and correct skin tone.Turns out good old chemical peels can actually deliver certain skin benefits:reversing melasma, acne breakouts, hyperpigmentation, dry skin, fine lines and wrinkles and overall improvement in the look and feel of the skin.

What to expect:

We all think of the hilarious episode of Sex and the City where Samantha undergoes a chemical peel and comes out looking like a orange creature from another planet. With a little bit of healing and a lot of peeling, her skin turned out fabulous! With all chemical peels, one can expect mild irritation, redness and, of course, peeling. These side effects will usually last for 3-5 days.Depending on the severity of the peel the recovery time can be prolonged and the peeling can be more intense.ALWAYS follow pre- and post- procedure care to minimize the potential for any adverse side effects.ALWAYS let your esthetician, doctor, or nurse be aware of any day to day skin care you are using, this can effect the outcome or contra-indicate a safe application of a peel.

Benefits:

  • Improving the skin’s glow, clarity, tone and texture

  • Reducing discoloration caused by sun damage or hormonal issues

  • Addressing visible skin imperfections and superficial scars

  • Increase collagen production and skin cell growth, making more hyaluronic acid, which results in plump, dewy, hydrated skin.

  • Helping to clear up acne breakouts (cystic to hormonal)

  • Smoothing away the look of fine lines and wrinkles

  • Increasing hydration of the skin

  • Skin-care products perform better after a peel. The dead cells, build-up and congestion imped the penetration of the skin. The peel allows the products to pierce deeper into the skin because of the deep exfoliation.

What they target:

Acids are a cure-all of all types of skin issues but the key in getting great results is finding the one that is compatible with your skin.

Glycolic Acid: Excellent exfoliator, targets rough and sun damaged skin.

Retinoic Acid:For anti aging, this is the one to reach for….stimulates collagen. Also used to treat acne.

Hyaluronic Acid:Responsible for creating plump, dewy, hydrated skin.If you are wanting more of a plumping effect, an injectable form of acid can be used that would be administered by a doctor.

Lactic or Oleic Acid:Skin looks dry, dull, dehydrated….great choice for sensitive or drier skin.

Salicylic Acid:Anti-inflammatory and one of the best choices for oily acne prone skin. Also helps with blackheads and whiteheads.

Chemical Peel Myths:

They can’t be used on sensitive skin.

They can only be used on the face.

Chemical peels remove deep scars.

All acids are harsh.

Chemical peels are just for faces.

For best long-term results, a series of three or more chemical peels, spaced four to six weeks apart. The benefit of receiving a series of peels is that this treatment will be able to target the deeper layers of the epidermis, giving your skin an enhanced exfoliation. This type of deep exfoliation can stimulate cellular turnover, resulting in the production of healthy, glowing skin.I am a firm believer in chemical peels and personally apply a peel 2-4 times per year.
