Face Shape / Facial Asymmetry

Did you know? Our eyebrows are sisters not twins!

I’ve shared this bit of info with many of you over the years and came across this article that nails it on the head! In one of my trainings for permanent makeup and the anatomy of the face, the instructor showed us a photoshopped image of a female with perfectly proportioned eyebrows, eyes, ears and other facial features. She looked like an alien! The point of the presentation was to show us, WE ARE ALL MIS-PROPORTIONED. God made us that way and each one of us uniquely beautiful in our own way!

When drawing and mapping out eyebrows, eyeliner or lips, it is important to keep our facial asymmetry in mind. In today’s society, we strive for perfection, but sometimes too perfect can have a stronger look that stands out more than the natural approach. One of the main things I go by before starting the application (especially an eyebrow procedure) is the person's natural bone structure, eyes, and face shape. Yes, we want permanent makeup to be as symmetrical as possible, but most always a person’s brow is a slight millimeter higher or wider than the other brow. Scarring, hereditary, natural hair growth all play a factor…….

The ole quote “BROWS ARE SISTERS NOT TWINS” is completely true! We want to create the look of balance, evenness and proportion, but don’t look too close with your 10x mirror. Instead, step back and see if it's in proportion to one another, to the eyes, and to overall structure of the face.

Same goes for eyeliner…..one eye may be droop more than the other or close in the corners differently from the other eye. Adjustments from permanent cosmetics can create an illusion of a symmetrical face without looking unnatural.

The lips need a look of fullness and the appearance equal rationed when divided down the center of the lips. The cupid bow or one side of the lip many be smaller than the other, or most commonly, scar tissue from fever blisters, sun damage or scarring can make the lips appear uneven.

Again, we do want precision, but keep this in mind about perfection.

Erin’s Tips: Our cell phones and fluorescent lights can add to sun damage, melasma and hyperpigmentation. Another reason the proper SPF should be worn everyday!
