3 Must have skin care products.
There are so many products on the market these days it’s hard to know what to pick. While the packaging is pretty, I want to make sure it can make my face pretty, too! So, here are the 3 must haves when shopping for skin care products.
Retin A
Make sure to get your vitamins, but don’t forget to apply some to your skin. Retin A is a form of Vitamin A which is stronger than the retinol you will find in many anti-aging products on the shelves. What makes it more effective is how it penetrates deeper layers of skin getting at the root of the outward signs of aging.
Start using Retin A in your 30s with 0.25% - 0.5% concentration building up to 1% as your skin adjusts. Use it 2 to 3 times per week and anticipate some peeling, redness, and flaking– it is an acid which makes it 20 times mightier than its little sister retinol. In a matter of months, this girl can repair DNA damage and increase cell renewal. She will be one of your new best friends!

Antioxidants
Antioxidants are all the buzz, but what are oxidants and why are we anti them? Here’s a little lesson in chemistry, ladies!
Our environment is full of free radicals from our cell phones, fluorescent lights, smoke, etc. These unstable molecules cause oxidative stress by damaging cells leading to sickness and aging. Antioxidants are man-made or natural substances that protect your cells from the free radicals.
Apply products with antioxidants in the morning to counter free radical attacks all day. This will reduce inflammation that leads to acne, hyperpigmentation, and cell damage. These little warriors will also repair DNA, correct sun damage, brighten skin tone, and help skin repair itself.

Sunscreen
I love sunshine: reading on the back patio, swimming in the summer, and playing outside with my little boys. I try to grab the sunscreen, but I hate the way it feels. The ones I have tried are either too thick, gloopy, runny, or sticky. The other problem is the chemicals cause my boys to break out in rashes, and the mineral based sunscreens leave my little mixed kids with a ghostly white residue.
Rather than risk sunburns, appearance of sunspots, fine lines and wrinkles, broken blood vessels, and possible skin cancer, I am putting on SPF 30 under my makeup and I’m good to goop! SuperGoop was created by Holly Thaggard. She created a sunscreen that isn’t yucky, but creamy-comfortable that I can’t live without. Her origin story is worth a read!
Black Girl Sunscreen created by Shontay Lundy is another sunscreen worth buying. She created a formula intended for people of color that need protection from the sun without the white-cast that others sunscreens leave behind. She believes in putting customs first and keeping the chemicals out of it which works great for my boys! Check out her story here.
